  • Grauvell Teklon Gold
This, for me, was one of those super lines full of promise that failed to deliver. The over enthusiastic breaking strains were a joke. The lighter ones especially seemed particularly weak and could be snapped in the hands. Pity because it may have put people off of trying very fine lines with a claimed high breaking strain. And there are good one's out there!

Gary Pye at NETS is now my go-to guy for all Century rods. He's arranged me both factory and custom build rods, and blanks - always at the best possible price, always delivered in a timescale he sates and I'm always kept fully updated personally by Gary as the order progresses. Great customer service and great after service. I will always buy Century from NETS in the future.

  • Coast HL8
This lamp looks and feels great sadly thats the only positives as it is seriously let down by reliability. I had 3 of these in as many weeks. They would either just cut out for no reason or when adjusting it would cut out. I need a lamp for safety reasons due to venues I fish as much as I need for it fishing. Reliability is more important than out right brightness. Thankfully when mine cut out it was on a flat beach a long walk in the dark, but thankfully not a slip on boulders or a cliff.

  • Varivas Big Mouth Extra
Very strong hooks. I use them when fishing off my boat in the Bristol Channel where the big fish have the advantage of hanging back in the big tide pull and need bullying. I also use them on my big fish Norway rigs where I need a large gape to make sure the hook points are clear of the large fish baits.

  • Leeda Rogue Lead Pouch
This is a great invention! No more spiky leads poking through the rucksack or in your back. I had always used bait boxes/paint buckets etc, but the leads can and do fall out. The nice thing with this one is that you can zip it shut!

  • Guided Fishing Norway
Stayed with John at the house in Saltstraumen this March. The house is well equiped with all the ameneties you need, and most importantly it's warm! John has done a lot of work researching shore fishing marks to fish and we were happy guinee pigs testing them out. We caught some cracking fish including halibut to 50lb, cod to 25lb, haddock to 11lb plus a record breaking ling of a snadge under 60lb. We are back there in January and again in March to see what turns up this time. Can't stress enough how helpful John is and anyone wanting to fish Norway should have a chat with John, he'll give you all the advice you'll need.

  • Sonik Gravity Surf 14' 4"
I am quite fond of this! Best on mixed ground and I have used mine out on the reefs, although I have others I would favour for rough ground. I match mine with a Penn 8000 fixed spool.

  • Ron Thompson Axellerator
What a rod! £120 of pure winching power! This rod is the ultimate tool to carry for fishing rough ground/kelp for conger, cod. This rod packs a punch, casting a 7oz and a full mackerel no problem. Love it,and will never part with it. Quite heavy but casts really well. As good as some of the brands 3x the price

  • Reel Fun, Portishead
Good selection of gear here for shore, boat and course fishing. Have some useful set ups in there for getting kids going in the Marina, which is a fun and easy way to introduce young ones to fishing. Always managed to provide even large orders of bait when ordering ahead. Very open and honest with advice on how the fishing has been going both on shore and boat.

  • Varivas Saltwater Champions
Fantastic hooks and the only ones I use for the smaller species, a nice fine hook strong and sharp. Very popular choice with alot of my friends and they are strong enough to deal with surpise hook ups of other larger species.

  • Zziplex Profile
I have been using a pair of Profiles as my main go to rods for a about three years now and I find them ideal for my style of fishing in the Bristol Channel. I use them in the matches that are held around the top of the BC when we are fishing for codling, whiting, flounder. I have invested in a match tip for the summer season when I am targeting smaller fish like Silver eels and sole. In the norm I am using 5 and 6oz leads and the Profile handles these with baits with no problem. I have even been using them on my trips to Norway when I fish the Trondheim Fjord at Skarnsundet targeting anything from dabs to double figure cod. The quality of the build on the rods will depend on where they are sourced from with many of the large tackle shops using their own build services rather than a factory build.

Really good quality hooks, best couple of pound you'll possibly spend , great for match fishing with small crab baits, nice and sharp and won't struggle to hook into a fish

  • Shakespeare Agility MX Surf 12' 9"
Purchased my agility a few weeks ago for pretty much a surf rod I can keep in the car. First impressions are the eye on the tip is quite small for sea fishing, had to really squeeze the clip through the eye and it just fit. Fixed spool fishing for me and can I say, although it's quite a soft tip with a bit of a flick as opposed to a heave it whips the lead out a fair distance. I would say however it is a beach rod as it does Not cope too well with any sort of snag. I do however think it would be fantastic for a bit of flattie bashing. Very responsive tip, and you can see bites perfectly. Even small bites. For the cost (£65) it's a bargain. 3 pieces mean it fits in the boot for those ad hoc days fishing. Just don't expect it to pull your lead out the kelp. No real backbone for snags. Light and fun though... Worth it for the cash. 5oz probably prime weight. 6 plus bait seems too much of an effort.

  • Kamasan B940M
I've found these hooks to bend out far too easily, even on flounder. I've also found the occasional brittle batch that have snapped instead of bent. I'd much rather use Mustard Nordic bend hooks if I need a fine wire, which bend more predictably, don't snap and are actually finer and sharper.

  • Shakespeare Salt XT Beach Shelter
A amazing shelter at a low cost. Most beach shelters have small flaps to pin the shelter down but the Shakespeare salt XT beach shelter has big flaps and is easy to pin down with either small rocks , sand or shingl and is easy to erect by Your self you can fit two people in it easy and comes with heavy duty pegs witch you can use on grass banks. I love mine and it is a must when the weather is against you

  • Varivas Saltwater Champions
A great match hook when using ragworm baits for flounder. The point is really long and sharp. I've done well in the past using the smaller sizes with fish baits when targeting dogfish but I've also landed a double figure cod in a big sea using them. Narrower in the gape than the Big Mouth but perfect for smaller species in general.

  • Daiwa TDX 4-10oz
My favourite uptide rod for use in the Bristol Channel, strong enough to bully Rays and congers to the net in the big tide rips that we get, yet still shows small bites. Perfect when paired up with a Slosh30.

  • IMAX Protec Smock
I grabbed one of these smocks and the matching bottoms as back up for a recent trip to the fjords. The Norwegian weather gave them a good test run including a torrential downpour. My fellow anglers who had another brand were having a few leaks and pockets filling up while I stayed dry. The only place where water came through was on the knees from where I was kneeling down whilst baiting up. Nice and light for packing on travels and quick drying. Overall thoughts are: great product for the price.

  • Avid Carp Safeguard Carp Cradle
Have had 3 now the 1st one had a manufacturing fault avid were brilliant they exchanged it for the newer version . Eventually I upgraded to the larger version. It's an absolute must for carp care I wouldn't leave my home to hit the bank without mine. They are sturdy and built well but would advise on the larger version if you are hunting big silt pigs

  • Princeton Tec Apex
This was my primary light until I upgraded to the Petzl Vario. For the money you not only get ample light output but a solid build and a five year warranty! My favourite thing about this lamp is that it runs on AA batteries and you could either carry spares in your trace wallet or get a set of rechargeable batteries and a charger for less than a tenner if you fish regularly. Be sure to go for the latest model which kicks out a whopping 275 Lumens though.

  • Snowbee Rock Hopper Boots
Fantastic / ridiculous grip when new, for reefs and weedy marks. Studs worn out within months of regular fishing, bit disappointing for the cost of these recently bought some snowbee studs to try and install to get grip properties back, not yet installed. These boots are very comfortable.
