When it comes to buying a headlamp, £300 seems a lot of money (cost at the time of purchase).
I was keen to see what this particular lamp had to offer but also how it may perform against the Rush model which was similar in price. The light output was always going to be phenomenal; for this kind of money you wouldn't expect anything less, but as soon as I opened the box I could see that this light wasn't going to be in pieces after a few sessions. Talk about rugged!
Think of a tank carrying a light house and you pretty much have the Vario. The wire is chunky and wont bend or snap and the control switch is large and easily accessible with cold, wet hands.
Although the Lumens are slightly down on the Rush model I mentioned earlier, the fact that the Vario has a spotlight beam aswell as the conventional flood is what sold it to me.
Landing fish from a cliff edge high above the water is what this lamp does best and I'm quite sure it will still be going strong in years to come.
My only tiny niggle is the elastic head band. Petzl have always struggled with this and as with models before, it has lost some of its elasticity. That aside, I couldn't recommend the Vario enough. If you fish in the dark from some nasty location's you need a reliable light. And this is it.
